On behalf of the members of the Potomac Valley Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., we welcome you to our website. Our nation and beyond needs the energy, dedication and devotion of women like you!  The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW), is a volunteer, non-profit, membership organization with a mission to lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families, and their communities.  The Potomac Valley Section (PVS) was organized in August 1997 and chartered in November 1997. Thus, our section will celebrate it’s Pearl (30th) anniversary in November of 2027.  PVS is one of the last sections approved by the beloved and renowned Dr. Dorothy Irene Height, President Emerita, the longest-serving National President, and Chair of NCNW. Dr. Height served NCNW for 40 years and PVS was especially blessed when Dr. Height attended our annual NCNW Sundays.

We are faithful and dedicated servants committed to serving those in need. The founder of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW), Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, dedicated her life to service and said that “Faith is the first factor in a life devoted to service. Without it, nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible.”  In 2025, NCNW commemorated 90 years of service. Our current National Chair, Dr. A. Lois Keith and President and CEO, Rev, Shavon Arline Bradley, continue to lead us in advancing NCNW’s mission and the legacy of Dr. Bethune. Accordingly, PVS supports our national organization and cooperates with other local sections to collectively advocate for and to assist women wherever they have a need. PVS tries to meet the needs and fill the gap for countless women, children and youth of African descent, specifically in Montgomery County and in the surrounding areas of Maryland. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for women, children, families, and our communities. The PVS motto is “What We Do Matters.” We believe that only the sky is the limit when impassioned leaders, dedicated workers, and committed partners come together on behalf of the most vulnerable by giving hope, showing love, and making a difference for better outcomes.

PVS has demonstrated the importance of capturing a multi-generational team of servant leaders in our ranks of 180-plus women and youth while understanding why it is critical to serve vigilantly and visibly in our communities. We believe that no woman or child should be without their basic needs being met in one of the wealthiest countries in the world.  In fact, the NCNW motto is “Leave no one behind.”  Our support taps several areas of life including, but not limited to education, economic and financial empowerment, voting rights, and social and emotional growth and development.  For example, one of our signature programs support women and children who are experiencing food insecurity through our Smart Sack initiative.  We provide educational assistance by granting book rewards and through a scholarship program for seniors who have an interest in pursuing educational endeavors beyond high school.  Our year long girls’ rites of passage program provides enrichment experiences and personal development activities for adolescents.

PVS  offers assistance to homeless women and their families living in shelters, provides donations to women and youth who are struggling with feminine hygiene and personal care insecurities, and facilitates health awareness activities, educational seminars and workshops. Additionally, our membership hosts several cultural events, supports the elderly in our community through a seniors’ enrichment program, provides classroom support in under-resourced public schools,
and encourages the community to participate in the political process with voter education initiatives. We are a dedicated and determined group of women who collaborate with other organizations toward a mutual objective of addressing the unmet needs of Montgomery County residents and neighboring communities.

The funding of our community service programs, projects, and initiatives comes at a cost. We welcome donations!! You can be confident in knowing that your support benefits those in need and the communities we serve. If you care to donate to PVS, please depress the “Donate” button below. All donations are tax-deductible.

Take good care as we all wade in the water together during a time in our country’s history that demands our attention and self-sufficiency.
