Committees Description
Standing Committees
Amenities Committee - Provides support and services to the Section by planning and hosting receptions for special programs, such as the Black History Program and Membership Recognition Program.
Bylaws Committee
Education Committee - Serves the Section and the community by addressing educational issues that impact the children in our community. Also, this committee seeks out and delivers programs that assist in closing the achievement gap of African American children in our community.
Finance Committee - Works to ensure the financial health of the Section. This committee coordinates and provides financial oversight of the Section’s budget activities
Membership Committee - Focuses on how we can go beyond ourselves and into our communities as strong African American women harnessing the power and potential to improve the quality of life physically, mentally and spiritually. The goal of this committee is to recruit, retain, and reclaim members. This committee also coordinates the Section’s participation in the Bethune Recognition Program and conducts membership drives.
Newsletter & Publicity Committee - Strives to keep the members and the community informed of Section activities and programs. The committee publishes a quarterly newsletter and distributes press releases.
Social Outreach Committee - Develops and implements community outreach programs, services, and activities that address social concerns within our community, specifically focused on outreach to women and children. As part of this effort the Committee supports existing organizations such as the Wilkins Avenue Women’s Shelter, Dorothy Day Place Shelter, Stepping Stone Shelter, Manna Food Center and other facilities and organizations that offer services to the homeless and disadvantaged.
Ways & Means Committee - The Ways and Means Committee (WMC) is responsible for planning and executing fundraising activities and events to support the financial needs of the Potomac Valley Section (PVS), a community based section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. WMC’s fundraisers are critical to financially support PVS’ community service and outreach programs, activities, and projects designed for women, children, and families in need. For example, these funds support but are not limited to seniors and youth enrichment programs, educational seminars/workshops, homeless shelters, seniors facilities, clothing drives to name a few.

Non Standing Committees
Health Committee - Increases health care awareness and facilitates the discussion of important health issues. This committee also strives to keep the Section and community informed of various health care initiatives and other pertinent health information affecting our communities.
Social Justice Committee - Provides education to the Section and the community on legislative and policy issues relating to women and families. The committee serves as an advisor to the President on matters of public policy.
Properties Committee - Maintain the accountability of the PVS Section's property.
Rites of Passage Committee - Our purpose is to reach and nurture girls in the community. The program provides workshops and activities that are scripture based and culturally centered to help girls meet today's as well as tomorrow's challenges. We emphasize self-worth, Christian values and life enhancement skills that will build unshakable foundations for these young ladies to be able to compete and succeed in the world. In an atmosphere of trust, we assist these young ladies in making good decisions and life choices.
Seniors Committee - Provides services to three Senior Residential Facilities located in the community: Arden Court Memory Care, Oakview Rehab and Assisted Living, and Springhouse Independent and Assisted Living. Programs and interactive activities are developed to support the spiritual, mental, and physical wellbeing of the residents. There is focus on educational information, health tips, inspirational scripture and songs, poetry, dance, comedy, fashion shows, birthday and holiday celebrations, and gifts for all.
Properties Committee - The Committee maintains an accurate record of all Section property including banner(s), clipboards, keys, photo albums, and paper documents. The Committee gathers, organizes, labels, all historical records of the Section. Has responsibility with the Historian for compiling and maintaining a category/index of all Section records and properties.
